Unlike most past competitions, the music portion will not be a composer-driven study. Rather it will focus on what was happening in the country that resulted in the music of the Civil War era. There will certainly be composers and song writers who will be important, but the competition will focus on the styles, typical formal structures of the music, and musical influences. Listening will obviously be a part of what students do, but identification of specific works will not occupy nearly as important a role as in past competitions.

Dickson, Keith D. "The Civil War for Dummies" ISBN 0-7645-5244-9 This outline is the committee's attempt to arrange in some order a very complicated period in US History. It is in no way complete. We have only suggested the main threads to be considered in the students' journey toward an understanding of a nation divided.
